I’m ready, let’s make the switch
If you haven’t already, please be sure to check out our guide What is a chargeback? to learn about how chargebacks work and how they can affect you and your payments.
Because of the high risk of financial loss, as well as large amounts of time and labour, chargebacks are something every trade contractor should be vigilant against. To avoid chargebacks, we recommend the following:
Maintain clear and open communication with your clients. Ensure you get written documentation showing their acknowledgement of, and satisfaction with, the work’s completion.
Let your clients know how the payment will appear on their statement. Payments made through Joist Payments will show up as WPY* followed by your business’s name as it appears on your payments account.
Don’t take on more than you can handle. They say it’s a good problem to have, but if you are juggling too many clients at once, or taking on a much larger job than you’re used to, despite your best intentions you can end up with an unsatisfied client who feels a chargeback is their only recourse.
Let your clients know you’re here to discuss any concerns. Sometimes a client will call their credit card company to get a refund when a simple call to you could have easily resolved the issue, but they just didn’t know that was an option.
Trust yourself when a job feels too good to be true. Trade contractors are the targets of some very sophisticated scams involving chargebacks these days. If something feels off about a job or client, trust your instincts and do a little more digging before you commit.

We have our own systems in place to try and protect you against chargebacks as well. You can learn more about those here:
