Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android makes it easy to accept contactless payments directly from your iPhone or most Android devices — no extra hardware required. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

Who is Eligible?

If you reside in the US and use Joist Payments powered by PayPal, you will be eligible to sign up for Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android.

How do I set up Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android?

If you’re already signed up for Joist Payments, follow the steps below. If you’re new to Joist Payments, you can learn more here.

  1. Go to your Payments Settings in the Joist app.

  2. Tap the "Get Tap to Pay" or "Set Up Now" button.

  3. You will be redirected to PayPal.

  4. Log in using your PayPal email + password.

  5. Tap “Continue to Allow”.

  6. Go back to Joist to finish the set up.

How do I use Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android?

  1. Create a New Invoice or Open an existing one.

  2. Ensure that Joist Payments is turned on (you can edit your invoice to check).

  3. Tap the "Tap to Pay" button in the top menu and it will launch on your screen.

  4. Have your client tap their credit or debit card on your screen as directed.

  5. Wait for the "Approved" message.

  6. Send your clients their paid invoice to close out the job.

Will Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android require a PIN?

Yes, certain cards may require the customer to enter a PIN. When this happens, the PIN screen is secure. It cannot be recorded or screenshotted.

Is there a transaction limit?

Yes, you can accept payments up to a maximum of $50,000 through the Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android option.

What are the device requirements for Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android?

iPhone

  • iPhone XS or newer.

  • iOS 16.7 or later (we recommend updating to the latest iOS version).

  • Logged into an iCloud account.

  • Location sharing enabled for Joist.

  • Device is not jailbroken.

  • Automatic date and time settings enabled.

Android

  • Android 8.1 or newer.

  • Device is not rooted.

  • Latest system updates and security patches installed.

  • Automatic date and time settings enabled.

⚠️ Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android is not supported on iPads or Huawei devices.

Can I remove Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android from Joist?

Similar to the other Joist Payments features, Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android cannot be removed from the app. However, you have full control over this feature and there's absolutely no obligation to use Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android.
