Introducing Mobile Check Deposit through Joist Payments with Stripe.
Mobile Check Deposits allows you to digitally capture and deposit paper checks in the Joist mobile app, eliminating trips to the bank and the delays associated with manual check processing.
Availability of Mobile Check Deposit with Stripe (as of June 4, 2026):
Mobile Check Deposit is rolling out currently with limited availability for iOS and Android. We will update this article again as availability changes.
Please see the requirements listed in the iOS and Android sections of this article, respectively.
Here's how you can use the Mobile Check Deposit feature in Joist. Use the links to jump to instructions for:
iOS
To use this feature on iOS, you must be a U.S. user and already be onboarded to Joist Payments with Stripe. Users who are currently set up with PayPal cannot access this feature yet.
Step 1: Tap the Payments button at the top of the page while viewing an invoice.
Step 2: Tap Deposit Check.
Step 3: If it’s your first time using this feature, you will need to accept the Terms and Conditions to proceed to the next step.
Step 4: Enter the check amount in the Amount section.
Optional: You can also add a description for the check at this step.
Step 5: Upload pictures of the front and back of the check.
For the Front of check section, Tap Add photo.
You’ll have 2 options to add a photo:
Tap on Take Photo to launch your camera app
Tap Choose from library to select from your saved photos
Once you take the photo of the front of your check or choose it from your library, you will see the photo uploaded in the Front of check section.
For the Back of check section, Tap Add photo and follow the same steps above.
Once you take the photo of the back of your check or choose it from your library, you will see the photo uploaded in the Back of check section.
Step 6: Tap Submit check.
This will start the uploading process for the check. This can take up to 30 seconds for the check to upload, and you will need to stay on the same screen until you see the confirmation message that the check has been successfully submitted.
Step 7: Tap Done, and it will take you to the invoice page.
Additionally, you have the option to tap on View Transaction instead, which will take you to the invoice payments summary.
You can also view the payments summary of an invoice at any time by tapping on the payments button at the top of your invoice screen.
Android
Mobile Check Deposit is currently available for all eligible U.S. users on Android who are onboarded to Joist Payments with Stripe. If you are on Android and currently onboarded with Joist Payments with PayPal, you will first be prompted to sign up for Joist Payments with Stripe.
Step 1: On your invoice page, tap the Green Circle button in the bottom-right corner, then tap Payments.
Step 2: Tap Deposit Check.
Step 3: If it’s your first time using this feature, you will need to accept the Terms and Conditions to proceed to the next step.
If you’re not registered for Joist Payments with Stripe, you will be prompted to sign up for Stripe first before proceeding to the next steps.
Step 4: Enter the check amount in the Amount section.
Optional: You can also add a description for the check at this step.
Step 5: Upload pictures of the front and back of the check.
For the Front of check section, Tap Add photo.
You’ll have 2 options to add a photo:

Step 6: Tap Submit check.

Viewing Check Status on Web
Mobile Check Deposits are currently only available on iOS and Android devices.
However, on a computer or laptop, you can view the status of any checks deposited through your mobile device by clicking the Payments tab on the specific invoice.
Submitting your check
When taking the photos of the check:
Make sure that you are in a well-lit area
Make sure that the entire front and back of the check are visible (make sure all 4 corners are visible)
Review the photos of the check to ensure text is clearly readable; Start over if the text is blurry/hard to read.
After submitting the check online:
You must keep each paper check for 14 days after you have deposited it online
After 14 days, you must securely destroy the check
The electronic check will be the sole valid record
You may not store or reuse any check image for future transactions
Check Status
Once submitted, your check can result in 3 different statuses:
Pending: This means the check is still being verified and has not been deposited yet.
Failed Deposit: This means that your check was not deposited. The reason for the failed deposit will be listed when you click Payments details in the invoice's Payments Summary.
Processed: This means your check has been successfully deposited into your account.
Note: Push notifications for check status are currently available for Pro and Elite members on Android only.

While there is a small fee for Mobile Check Deposit, you gain the convenience of depositing a check as soon as you receive it from a client. This helps to stay organized, get paid faster, and save trips to the bank.
How to Offset Fees
To cover the additional cost of Mobile Check Deposit, you can:
Add a Small Markup – Adjust your pricing with the markup feature in the app to account for the Mobile Check Deposit fee. You can add markup by itself, or in addition to the "Cover Fees" feature in Joist.
Include Fees in Estimates – Plan ahead and build the cost of Mobile Check Deposit into your project from the start.
FAQ
How long will it take to reach my bank account?
It can take up to 5 business days for the check to clear and for funds to appear in your connected bank account.
Can I refund my client through the invoice if it’s a mobile check deposit?
Refunds are not supported for Mobile Check Deposits at this time. To return funds to your client, please use an alternative refund method.
Are there any deposit limits?
The minimum amount allowed in a single check deposit is $0.50 USD.
The maximum amount allowed in a single check deposit is $20,000 USD.
